Sciatica

A really common problem seen in the clinic is 'Sciatica'. But what exactly is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a term that is used to describe pain running down the back of the leg that is caused by the sciatic nerve being impinged / irritated. Various different structures around the spine can nip / irritate the sciatic nerve causing a shooting pain anywhere from the lower back to the foot. It may also cause altered sensation such as pins and needles or numbness.
The most common causes of sciatic pain are bulging discs, inflammation around where the nerves exit the spine or arthritic / degenerate spinal joints.
Sciatica can vary in intensity but sometimes the pain can feel severe and if not managed correctly can become debilitating.
True sciatica can sometimes be mistaken for other problems that cause pain in a similar area. Here at Bodywise we can help you to understand the cause of your pain and treat the root cause accordingly. This will usually involve some manual therapy , a progressive exercise programme, postural advice and general management advice. A combination of this type of treatment is usually extremely successful in resolving sciatica.
